It’s more like: if you can think of times in your life that you’ve treated people with extraordinary decency and love, and pure uninterested concern, just because they were valuable as human beings. The ability to do that with ourselves. To treat ourselves the way we would treat a really good, precious friend. Or a tiny child of ours that we absolutely loved more than life itself. And I think it’s probably possible to achieve that. I think part of the job we’re here for is to learn how to do this.
–David Foster Wallace in the book “Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself,” a long interview with David Lipsky.
Yes we all need to be nice to ourselves but so often we are not nice we are really hard on ourselves, well I know I am
Joanne, I agree. In many ways it is easier to be nicer to others than to ourselves. I can have boundless hope for my friends and their dreams, but with myself I say, “Be realistic!” 😀
Thank you for your thoughts, my friend. It is very easy to be nice to you.

Very good point…not sure why we don’t value ourselves. A worthwhile goal. Glad to have found your blog.
Hi Lori, I’m glad that you stopped by as well! It is a challenge to love ourselves in this kind, compassionate way. I suppose we see all our flaws and weaknesses so often. Actually, you’d think that would make us MORE sympathetic to ourselves. Alas. I like it as a goal.
Thank you for stopping by and for your comment. I just followed your blog! Looking forward to getting to know you.
All my best,
Paige
just read it, what a nice words, thank you for sharing …
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. The book was full of some good gems for readers, but I thought this worked well with my desire to be open to kindness.
Hope you enjoyed the weekend–
Paige
Sometimes that is the hardest thing to do! So easy to love and be kind to others, but so hard to value ourselves and what we do to make our world right! 👍
HI Fatima, I agree! In others we can see all the silver linings, but that can be harder when we are looking in the mirror (is that a silver hair?) 😀
Thanks,
Paige
Hello Paige, how right your are – we do need to be nicer to ourselves. I’ve just come over from Darlene’s blog to say how much I enjoyed reading about you there.
Barbara, Thank you so much for coming over to see the blog. I was delighted that Darlene asked me to talk about travel and writing. 🙂 I hope you’ll enjoy reading my stories as well.
Welcome!
