The Storyteller

The man in the red Hawaiian shirt is telling a huge story to his friend while they wait at the bus stop. His gestures make it seem like a fish tale, or perhaps the play-by-play of a fist fight. He draws out his hands, he expands into the personal space of two people sitting to his left. He is on stage during the idle time before the bus arrives. As he engages in this monologue as his companion nods, a mother and child rock while standing, and two teenagers steal glances at the story from under their hats and headphones.

People in the cars nearest the bus stop are also waiting since their light is red, and they also cast their gaze toward this sidewalk performance. An elderly couple rolls down their passenger side window, closest to the action. The woman tilts her tuft of white hair out of the car, hoping to get the gist of the unfolding legend before the bus arrives, or before the light turns green.

Vividly described – I could well imagine the entire scene…

The power of narrative, enhanced by the skill of the teller: you and the man at the bus stop

There is nothing like a good story to draw the human spirit into the fold, forging a shared connection between individuals that may seem unlikely in any other circumstance. Well told story yourself, Paige – thanks for sharing 🙂
